Organic Foods- Benefits of Organic Turmeric and Organic Coconut-Blog Post 2

Turmeric-PLANT AND ROOTOrganic Turmeric ( Curcuma Longa); known in some parts of the world as ‘Haldi’; is related to the Ginger family of root herbs. This is an herb that is thought to be over 4,000 years old in origin and is highly revered for its properties as an herbal tonic and support to many systems in the bodies of humans and animals.

Curcumin is the active constituent of turmeric and only the root of the plant is used in most all holistic forms of this miraculous plant.

It is known the world over for its ability to support, as well as nourish the blood, brain, liver, teeth, gums, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, as well for as its anti-inflammatory properties.

You can tell by its bright, sunny yellow color in powder form and its radiant orange color in its root form that it contains an abundance of anti-oxidants.  Of course we know that anti-oxidants are highly beneficial for fighting off and protecting against tumors, helping support the immune system, and so much more.

A vegan/vegetarian safe product; Organic Turmeric is most commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, respiratory, circulatory, nervous system, and digestive system support tool.  It is also very high in beneficial fiber, potassium, manganese, and vitamin B-6.  It is also known for its anti-fungal, antibacterial, and analgesic( pain relieving) properties.

You can safely and easily start off by introducing your dog and yourself to organic turmeric by starting with a high quality organic turmeric such as the one offered by Organic India, and with a dose of approximately 1/4 tsp. 3x per day in meals and working up to 1 tsp. 3x per day.

This is an herb that is safe for all humans and animals, with the exception of the fact that it is advised NOT to use it ‘IF’ you or your pet are currently taking another form of BLOOD-THINNER such as ‘Coumadin’ or ‘Warfarin’, because turmeric also has natural blood thinning properties, so you wouldn’t want to be using BOTH the Prescription blood thinner and the turmeric together.  It is also advised not to use it while taking any medicines for Low Blood Pressure, or with NSAIDS like Ibuprofen, or with a pregnant or nursing person or pet.  ** It is always best to check with your Holistic Veterinarian in the case of your pet, and in your case, check with a Holistic or Naturopathic Health Professional. The reason I say Holistic professional rather than a ‘traditional, allopathic, Western Medicine’ doctor is because of the fact that most all of them are a good 10-15 years behind the times when it comes to the benefits of organic, natural foods; including herbs and spices, as they apply to being used to help prevent dis-ease and maintain wellness.

Combining Organic Turmeric with Organic, Unrefined Coconut Oil will only serve to enhance the properties of both, and will benefit you and your pet that much more when used in tandem with one another.

Coconut itself is an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-microbial, antibacterial due to its naturally occurring lauric acid found in it.   It is good for killing off bacteria such as Staph(staphyllococcus Aureus), Candida Albicans– (a common source of yeast infections in both humans and animals ) , and it is also rich in MCT’s ( Medium Chain Triglycerides)- which are the ‘good’ fats that help to increase metabolism and fat burning abilities.  Organic Coconut actually helps burn belly fat.  Here’s a recipe for a lovely drink that you and your dog can share and that you can use which includes Organic Turmeric and Organic Coconut.   It is called  “Golden Milk”

Golden Milk is a unique drink that is known in many cultures as a ‘tonic’ of sorts, and its main ingredients are a ‘base’ of Coconut Milk and the prized organic Indian herb called Turmeric.

It has been used for thousands of years as a ‘cleanse’ for the body. It is known to be beneficial to the inner organs, the joints, and the hair, skin, and nails, and for dogs; their fur.  The Golden milk recipe we share here is just one ‘version’ made to demonstrate its healing properties and all Organic ingredients are used.

  • 2 Cups of Coconut Milk or 1 Cup of Coconut Cream
  • 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil (optional)
  • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Turmeric (Or) Washed, Grated Organic Turmeric Root
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick or 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 ‘dash’ of Nutmeg or Cardamom

  • **When making this recipe for your DOG; Do NOT add the Nutmeg or Cardamom or Black Pepper.
  • Cinnamon is the only one of these spices that is beneficial for Dogs as well as humans**

  • Small Pinch of Black Pepper and Grated Ginger (the fresher the better!)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Local Honey (*may be added after milk is warmed)

To make the Golden Milk, just mix all of the above ingredients in a small saucepan like a Green Pan Healthy Ceramic Pan and bring to a light boil for about 4-8 minutes (or until golden yellow)

* If you are using the Fresh Organic Turmeric Root as we did in this recipe, we suggest you put all ingredients into a nice, high quality blender like one of my all time favorites-The Vitamix Pro,  and ‘Puree’ first, if you don’t already have an Immersion Blender, then pour into your saucepan and warm.

  • Let cool slightly and pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
